How to Choose Your First eBike in 2025

Jan 15, 2025 · 5 min read

Electric bikes have exploded in popularity, and choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Whether you are commuting downtown, tackling mountain trails, or just looking for a fun way to explore your neighborhood, this guide breaks down everything you need to know before buying your first eBike.

1. Understand the Different eBike Classes

Before shopping, it helps to know the three classes of electric bikes:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph. Allowed on most bike paths.
  • Class 2: Pedal-assist plus throttle, up to 20 mph. Great for beginners.
  • Class 3: Pedal-assist up to 28 mph. Ideal for commuters who need speed.

Most Cyberbike models are Class 2, giving you the flexibility of both pedal-assist and throttle power.

2. Motor Types: Hub vs Mid-Drive

The motor is the heart of your eBike. Here is what to consider:

  • Hub motors sit in the rear wheel hub. They are affordable, reliable, and great for flat terrain and commuting.
  • Mid-drive motors are positioned at the cranks. They offer better hill climbing and a more natural ride feel, ideal for mountain trails.

Cyberbike's Raptor series uses powerful 750W–1000W hub motors, while our trail models feature Bafang mid-drive systems for superior off-road performance.

3. Battery Range: How Far Can You Go?

Battery range depends on capacity (measured in watt-hours, or Wh), terrain, rider weight, and assist level. As a general guide:

400–500 Wh: 25–40 miles (city commuting)
600–800 Wh: 40–60 miles (mixed terrain)
900+ Wh: 60–80+ miles (dual battery setups)

Cyberbike models ship with Samsung/LG cells rated from 614 Wh to 960 Wh, with optional dual-battery configurations on select models.

4. Frame Sizing and Comfort

Getting the right frame size is critical for comfort and safety. Stand over the top tube with both feet flat on the ground — you should have at least 1–2 inches of clearance. Most Cyberbike models come in multiple frame sizes, and our step-through options make mounting easy for all riders.

5. Safety Certifications Matter

Always look for UL-certified eBikes. This certification ensures the electrical system, battery, and charger meet rigorous safety standards tested by Underwriters Laboratories. Every Cyberbike is UL Safety Certified, so you can ride with confidence.
